Time Trial Techniques: 2019 NASA Champs — Part 2

OK, hang onto your hats for this one. It’s epic, in the classical sense, which isn’t necessarily good for the Internet attention span, but in terms of what you can learn from these three drivers, epic is great. This year’s TT3 competition at the NASA Championships Presented by Toyo Tires was diverse. The Champion, Denis Clavette had a BMW E46 M3 with a straight six. Second place Dan Westerwick’s Ford Mustang GT had a V8 and third-place finisher Andrew Bakun’s Porsche 944 Turbo had been repowered with GM LS3 V8 power. It’s always interesting to see how drivers will respond [...]

Getting it Done in a Borrowed Car

Robin Burnett was having a good weekend at the NASA Championships Presented by Toyo Tires at Mid-Ohio in September. After earning pole for the Spec Iron qualifying race and leading it for three laps, he blew his engine. His weekend wasn’t over. A good friend from his NASA racing family Steve Revelette loaned him his car. Burnett spent Saturday night swapping the suspension from his car, then spent Sunday’s raceclawing his way up from a last-place start to take the Spec Iron Championship. Getting it done in a borrowed car. The post Getting it Done in a Borrowed Car appeared [...]

Cat Wrangling

Much as I am loath to admit it, producing an event is one of the things I am least qualified to do. To me, it’s always felt akin to trying to stuff five feral cats into a duffel bag. Once you think you have all of them in the bag, three jump out and you’ve got to wrangle them all over again. And you’re bleeding. The details that go into event planning seem endless. I’ve had jobs before in which event planning was a small part of what we did, and I farmed out those responsibilities to other staff as [...]

Time Trial Techniques: 2019 NASA Champs – Part 1

At this year’s NASA Championships Presented by Toyo Tires, Time Trial 5 was the closest of all Time Trial competition in 2019. The top three finishers were separated by a total of just .112 seconds, and first and second were separated by just .048 seconds. What’s more, the top five all were within .500 seconds of one another. It was that close. Samed Rizvi finished first with a 1:36.474, followed by Team John Wallace Racing with a 1:36.522 and then Robert Porter with a 1:36.586. Rizvi and Wallace drive Honda S2000s. Porter drives a BMW E36 M3. We wanted to [...]

2019 NASA Championships By The Numbers

The 2019 NASA Championships Presented by Toyo Tires Sept. 18-22, 2019 at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course was instrumental in producing an experience like no other, memories and images that will last a lifetime and champagne that tastes sweeter than anything in all of France. The NASA Championships also generates lots of interesting numbers. For example, a total of 338 drivers chased top honors at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course in 24 racing and seven Time Trial classes. Those are just some of the numbers produced at this year’s Championships event, and now that all those champagne corks have been popped [...]

Eric Waddell Takes Hard-Fought 2019 Championship in ST5

The front four cars in Super Touring 5 were all within sight of one another and battling back and forth all race long. It was as tight as racing gets. Eric Waddell managed to keep Thai Diep and Cagri Yilmaz behind him for the whole race. “Man that was hard work. That was hard work,” Waddell said. “They did not give me one second to rest. Never did I get a nice lead.” For most of the race, Yilmaz and Diep hounded Waddell, who won a championship in 2012 at Mid-Ohio. There was a bit of argy-bargy and Yilmaz dropped [...]

Michael McAleenan Nabs Fifth NASA Championship in 2019 by Winning GTS4

Standing atop the podium is a familiar spot for Michael McAleenan, who had four championships coming into Mid-Ohio. McAleenan, who lives in Washington and races with NASA NorCal, was quick enough to take the top time in Friday qualifying, and to get pole position for the Championship race on Sunday. This was McAleenan’s first time racing at Mid-Ohio. His lap times were just a tick quicker than Great Lakes GTS racer Ed Baus. McAleenan jumped out into the lead and within a few laps, found himself mixing with traffic from other classes. Six laps in, Robert Thorne spun on the [...]

A.J. Hartman Pilots EcoBoost V6 Mustang to 2019 American Iron Championship

A.J. Hartman had been on top in American Iron all weekend. He scored the top time in qualifying Friday and won the qualifying race. Meanwhile, lurking just behind all weekend was 2018 American Iron champion Michael LaPaglia. LaPaglia jumped into the lead shortly after the green flag and held it for a while fighting off a hard-charging Hartman, who eventually did get around him, but it was fleeting. LaPaglia retook the lead and the checkered flag first, but Hartman ended up with the Championship after LaPaglia was DQ’d in the days following the event. The DQ moved Jeff Wood up [...]

Faessler Scores Big Super Unlimited Win and 2019 Championship

During most NASA Championships, the Super Unlimited champion is normally awarded to a sleek sports racer. For 2019, Super Unlimited was dominated by Brian Faessler’s monster twin-turbo Mustang. This car rattles your eyeballs as it goes by, and it went by competitors Jacek Mucha’s Swift and John DeAngelis in an Elan DP02. “I got the jump on the start and was just able to get the lead going into Turn 1, just kind of maintained,” Faessler said. “Just to be able to prove what the Paul’s Automotive Engineering Mustang can do against these small prototypes, that’s definitely not something easy [...]
